He is an arts graduate, who in the 1990’s became fascinated by early Macs and the emerging internet. Since then he has worked in educational technology as a researcher and teacher, and project manager, seeking to understand the relationship between people and computers. In 2008 he was awarded a doctorate from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, under the Direction of Josep Blat. He has been active in the cybernetics community for many years, which continues to be a source of insight in his work. At the University of Bolton, he was Professor at the Institute for Educational Cybernetics, a member of Jisc Cetis, and also led research and graduate studies in the Department of Education. He has published extensively, with a particular focus on cybernetics, learning design, and learning analytics. In 2018 he received the Martin Wolpers award for lifetime achievement in eLearning.
