I Virtual Debate Tournament LEDU STEM Cátedras Telefónica

The I LEDU (Liga Española de Debate Universitario by its acronym in Spanish; Spanish University Debate League) STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Cátedras Telefónica Virtual Debate Tournament begins, which will run from February 15th to May 5th , 2021. Through this tournament, which will be held telematically, the aim is to encourage and promote the dialectical skills involved in a debate, such as emotional intelligence and empathy, teamwork skills, critical and innovative spirit… In general, to enhance skills related to oral communication among students who will be future scientific and technological professionals.

What is it?

It is a telematic debate that will revolve around the question: Are we personally and socially protected from the control of algorithms?

Who can participate?

Any student between 18 and 24 years old who is studying a STEM degree at a Telefónica Chair university.

What should the teams be like?

The teams must be made up of two members from the same university. One of them will act as captain.

Teams of students from different universities will not be allowed to participate.

Dynamics

The competition will be run on a knockout basis and will be specified in the rules and system of competition that will be sent to all teams once the registration form has been completed. A sporting format with intellectual content will be followed, encouraging teamwork. Participants will learn to take responsibility and delegate for the good of the team, as well as to improve their communication skills.

All teams will have to prepare their arguments for and against the question posed, as they will have to defend both positions during the tournament.

Stages

  1. Registration: February 15th to March 15th, 2021
  2. Drawing of pairings: March 17 th, 2021 (online, via YouTube).
  3. Online tournament: March 22nd to April 20th, 2021.
  4. Final: May 5th, 2021.

Prizes

The winning team will get a place to participate in the final phase of the Spanish University Debate League, which rewards the winning team with 6,000 Euros and 3,000 Euros for the runner-up.

In addition, the winning team will receive a certificate diploma, a package of books and gifts, and a trophy as champion.
