UNIR wins the innovation award at the 6th #Hack4Edu

The sixth edition of #Hack4Edu took place during the week of October 27-31. This initiative is a collaboration between the Telefónica Chair Network and is organized by the Telefónica Foundation and the “la Caixa” Foundation through their educational innovation program with ProFuturo technology and the Pontifical University of Salamanca (UPSA).
As a result of UNIR’s participation, our students won First Prize for Innovation for the MyLEA application and Third Prize for their Teacher Assistant proposal.
The participation of UNIR students was promoted by the Telefónica-UNIR Chair in Digital Society and Education, targeting all students in the School of Engineering and Technology. With a total of 99 registrants, two teams reached the final phase and one more student participated in the final as part of an international team led from Ukraine.
After three days of intense work, the UNIR teams presented three projects:

  • MyLea: Carmen Witsman, a student on the Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, presented an application to centralize all the tools used in the study, combining information from the virtual classroom with tools for note-taking, motivational elements, the creation of exercises and exams, and even competitions between students studying the same subjects.
  • Teacher Assistant: Juan Carlos Vegas, a student on the Master’s Degree in Software Engineering and Computer Systems and a member of the international team, was congratulated for implementing this good practice, which successfully expands the skills of participants. His project proposes to address the high workload of teachers, which can lead to delays in feedback, through a system that collects a rubric from the teacher and evaluates the work submitted by students. This system also provides statistics on overall and individual results, highlighting the most problematic areas and adding suggestions for improvement.
  • Balancing student well-being: This project proposes an immediate and inclusive psychological first aid application for students. For 5 minutes, students can talk or chat with a therapist to resolve the immediate issue and schedule a visit. It includes sign language (currently from Peru) and support for different conditions through forms.

Congratulations to our winning students and all participants!
