Project ASSAI: AI-Driven Assesment in Education: Shaping Policies for Responsible and Ethical Implementation (E+ Forward)
Logroño, La Rioja, Spain. 30 March of 2026
The rapid integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) into education systems requires higher education (HE) institutions and policymakers to strengthen their organizational readiness and regulatory capacity. While much of the public debate has focused on individual interactions with AI tools, there is an urgent need to address the systemic implications of GenAI for education systems, as it reshapes institutional roles, professional responsibilities, pedagogical models, and organizational processes.
ASSAI responds to this need by supporting HE policymakers, institutional leaders, and professionals in planning, regulating, and ethically governing the use of GenAI. The project places particular emphasis on assessment, recognizing that the evaluation of learning outcomes is classified as high-risk under the European AI regulatory framework and constitutes a central pillar of higher education’s pedagogical mission and institutional sustainability.
Through preparatory studies, systematic inquiries, collaborative policy formulation, and mainstreaming activities, ASSAI develops practical guidance and evidence-based recommendations to help stakeholders address the benefits, constraints, ethical considerations, and long-term systemic impact of AI in higher education. The project will culminate in the launch of sustainable services, including a web-based policy assistant and a policy implementation service, ensuring continued institutional support beyond the project lifecycle.
By combining policy engagement, communication, and dissemination activities, ASSAI aims to strengthen the organizational capacity of higher education institutions to respond effectively to the challenges posed by GenAI, ensuring that its deployment remains inclusive, human-centred, and ethically grounded while contributing to the resilience and sustainability of European education systems.
The total grant for this project is 989,226.13 euros.
